Bulk dehydrated potatoes in Canada

I went for a drive today... There's a bulk dehy potato plant an hour away from me. I had great difficulty finding bulk potato (dehy) sources; imagine my glee when I found the plant nearby.

Bottom line: My cost excluding fuel and the lunch my son & I enjoyed- $45 CDN for a 25 kg (55 lbs I'm guessing???) bag of dehydrated potato granules. The bag stands 3 inches above my knees. I bought 2 ($90 CDN). Fresh off the line- literally. :D

What I'm wondering: Dehy products seem to be in huge demand. Does this particular item fall into that category? If so I may try to flog these things on ebay. Opinions??? Anyone regardless of location???

Also... I'm going to ask GIM'ers in Canada if they would be interested in any of this at my cost (+ fuel and burger) plus shipping (I'll save any gouging for fleabay). Just PM me to give me an indication of interest and I'll PM you back when there's enough to justify another trip to the dehy plant. I'm also guessing shipping via Greyhound may be reasonable. I'll check when I have time.

I'll take a piccy or 2 shortly. I shoulda brought my camera to the plant.

If this is available everywhere somebody please tell me...

I'd love to get a bag of that stuff. It probably lasts forever. I'm not in Canada however.

Yup - this is something I recently purchased as I like them spuds....

You aren't going to beat the deal you got - the only down side IMO is that it is not in smaller portion bags. The commercial name fdor this is Instant Mashed Potatos....if yer going to be selling on e-bay - you'd get the hits with that naming.

Here is a place to compare the pricing...http://www.foodservicedirect.com/ind...d_Potatoes.htm

52 lbs for $69 http://www.foodservicedirect.com/ind...d_Potatoes.htm

If you don't mind - does that site sell over the net? If they do - mind posting their name/site?

As for the smaller sizes: I've got one of those gnarly professional foodsaver thingys- is presucked desirable?

Little to no info on site, though I'll find a link.

I was going to leave it until I'm ready to mylar/oxy it. No pic today but I'll do just that when I package it. I need to do 6 pails at a time & I have 4 ready. Hard to guess how many pails for these 2 bags...

I have an adventurous 4 year old and visions of a pantry lined with tater flakes...

Granules might as well mean powder. The wife says it's just like the stuff she gets at Costco. I left some out and will try them for supper tomorrow.

I suspect it'll be just like instant potatoes. :D

Found this on their site, fwiw:
Quote:

Our dehydrated potato operation is capable of producing eight million pounds of dehydrated potatoes per year. Agristar potato granules are made using the Add-Back method a gentle dehydration process that breaks fresh cooked potatoes down to individual cells. Our granules are characterized by a consistent fine texture. By utilizing Add-Back technology, we are able to keep the wall of each potato cell intact, which in turn keeps the amount of free-starch very low. Agristar potato granules never produce the gluey consistency common to other types of potato products such as flakes and flour.

I just checked and I have the A3002- granules for snack foods. Next time I'll specify the AOML2- complete mix for instant mashed potatoes. Oops- learning curve here. I don't think it will matter too much. Taste test tonight anyway. I suspect it's just missing some flavoring, possibly powdered milk- I'll add butter. :D

Re: Bulk dehydrated potatoes in Canada

Cooked some up- tasted bland until I added some salt... now I'm quite happy to use the powder. I followed the recipe on a box of instant- not sure if I added enough granules though. I think so... The amount shown unused is about what I used in that pot.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...Picture008.jpg

The recipe I used:

Boil 2 cups water & 3 tbsp. margarine, remove from heat add 3/4 cup cold milk, add packet potatoes (here I'm unclear and I added 1 cup granules) while stirring. I had to add salt to get 'er done.

Tastes good to me... All fwiw.

Oh yeah... they've sat a few minutes now and seem thicker- about just right. Taste is bang on what you'd expect. When the kids get home I'll put some in front of them- I'm sure they won't think anything out of the ordinary.

It's likely the same as any other instant anyway.

Eating as I type... The things I do for you guys... ;)

Edit: I have to add that I'm gonna get more. This stuff seems to go a loooooong way- one cup does that pot. Nice. I've gotta have at least 4 more pails- that's gonna go a loooooong way!
